Businesses throughout the Southeast U.S. turn to Snappy Internet & Telecom for their experience in delivering high-bandwidth Internet access for the most demanding applications. When faced with the need for faster backhauls in a heavily congested environment, Snappy turned to Mimosa.

Snappy utilized the Mimosa backhaul products to replace a number of third party radios in their downtown Miami network. The radios were utilizing 20 MHz of spectrum and getting 30-40 Mbps each. However, the area is extremely heavily congested (20+ radios on the tower!) and Snappy was in dire need of more bandwidth.

“The spectral efficiency of the Mimosa backhaul solution gives us some breathing room, it will keep us going until the 10 GHz spectrum is available!”

The provider used two B5s and a B5c radio on a single tower. The links range from 0.2 miles to 8 miles and use various channel widths (though all links leverage the Dual Link feature). The link throughputs range from 250-780 Mbps (aggregate PHY). Faisal Imtiaz, President of Snappy Internet & Telecom says, “The spectral efficiency of the Mimosa backhaul solution gives us some breathing room, it will keep us going until the 10 GHz is available!”

Snappy and Mimosa Work Together to Synchronize and Collocate Across ISPs

Snappy’s links were fairly short and able to attain a high throughput, so other than a few tips from Mimosa’s support team, very little optimization was needed. That is, until a neighbor put a new Mimosa radio on the very same tower. Snappy called the Mimosa support team and Chris Trout, Mimosa’s Director of Network Design and Support was able to work with Snappy to find the perfect solution – the Mimosa Site Survey.

“The Mimosa team was extremely, extremely helpful in optimizing the link and teaching us a few tricks! Ability to sync is a huge help!”

To understand how the Mimosa Site Survey tool can help with collocation (even with radios from other ISPs), a little explanation about the gender split within the Mimosa TDMA protocol could be helpful.

When configuring your B5 radio, you are prompted to assign a “Gender”: A or B. All devices with Gender A will transmit at the same time, while those devices with gender B are receiving and vice versa. In order to synchronize collocated devices, all the radios at a given site should be of the same Gender.

The Mimosa Site Survey tool is integrated directly into the product user interface and allows users to view the Gender/TDMA configuration of other Mimosa radios in the area. Faisal used the Site Survey tool to discover the Gender of his neighbor’s radio and sync his radios to the same one. This meant less interference and higher throughput for all the Mimosa B5 radios on the tower.

Conclusion

Up next, Faisal says that Snappy is looking to set up a 1⁄2 dozen more B5c radios across Miami!
